According to BlockBeats, on August 27, the Dallas Federal Reserve released a report stating that if tokenized deposits become widely adopted, they could increase the sensitivity of deposits to interest rates, accelerate the flow of funds across banks, and weaken banks' liquidity and maturity transformation capabilities, thereby affecting bank credit supply and financing costs.

The report points out that, unlike stablecoins such as USDT and USDC, tokenized deposits are typically issued by regulated banks and pay interest. Blockchain technologies such as instant settlement, smart contracts, and agent-based AI may make it easier for customers to quickly transfer funds in pursuit of higher returns, thereby weakening the "stickiness" of traditional bank deposits.

The Dallas Federal Reserve estimates that if deposit interest rate sensitivity increases by 10%, banks' ability to bear interest rate risk could decrease by approximately $700 billion (on a 10-year equivalent basis); if the weighted average maturity of deposits shortens by 10%, the banking system's maturity transformation capacity could decrease by approximately $580 billion.

The report argues that if banks wish to maintain their current loan volumes, they may need to rely more on wholesale financing such as term debt, ultimately making bank lending models more similar to those of non-bank financial institutions and potentially driving up credit costs for consumers and businesses.

Currently, several global banks have begun testing tokenized deposits and 24/7 settlement systems, and the potential impact of tokenized deposits on the traditional banking system is attracting increasing attention from regulatory agencies.

According to BlockBeats, a new survey by the National Institute on Retirement Security (NIRS) on August 27th shows that 77% of Americans believe there are risks in including cryptocurrency in their workplace retirement plans, with 46% considering the risks "very high"; another 53% of respondents oppose employers offering cryptocurrency investment options.

A survey shows that Americans are increasingly worried about retirement security, with 80% of respondents believing that the United States is facing a "retirement crisis," a significant increase from 67% in 2020; 61% are worried about their financial security after retirement, 68% said that saving for retirement is becoming more difficult, and 77% said that debt is affecting their ability to save.

Meanwhile, the U.S. government and regulatory agencies are pushing to expand the allocation channels for cryptocurrencies and other alternative assets in retirement accounts such as 401(k). In March of this year, the U.S. Department of Labor proposed rules to provide a potential safe harbor for 401(k) accounts to include alternative assets, but the plan has been opposed by some Democratic lawmakers who argue that crypto assets are too volatile and investor protection remains insufficient.

This means that US policymakers are gradually relaxing restrictions on the allocation of retirement funds to crypto assets, but ordinary investors remain cautious about the risks involved.
