According to a Forbes report on August 26, Bitcoin has risen about 20% in the past week, breaking through $80,000 for the first time since May. Robbie Mitchnick, head of digital assets at BlackRock, stated that the size of their Bitcoin spot ETF, IBIT, "will continue to grow" as BlackRock continues to expand investor access to and allocation of Bitcoin.
BlackRock has lowered the minimum investment amount required for investors to directly exchange Bitcoin for IBIT shares from $25 million to $1 million. This mechanism allows eligible investors to directly convert their Bitcoin holdings into ETF shares without first selling the Bitcoin on the market, potentially avoiding capital gains tax on asset sales. Since its launch, IBIT has become the fastest-growing ETF across multiple scale milestones, currently representing over 765,000 Bitcoins worth approximately $60 billion.
Mitchnick stated that real risks such as kidnapping, extortion, and custody failures are driving some Bitcoin holders to move all or part of their self-custodied assets to ETFs. The recent attack on some Coldcard hardware wallets has further exacerbated market concerns about the security of self-custodied assets.
Data shows that 13 US-based Bitcoin spot ETFs, led by IBIT, recorded their strongest weekly inflows in nearly 10 months. Talos researchers stated that Bitcoin's approximately 23% gain and volatility increase this week are both historically high, and similar price action typically corresponds to above-average returns in the short to medium term. Unlike the breakout in May, which lacked ETF support and subsequently retreated, this rally has received structural buying support that was previously absent.
