According to BlockBeats, on June 27th, OpenAI released a preview version of its GPT-5.6 series models, including three different versions: Sol, Terra, and Luna. Due to restrictions imposed by the US government's framework for security review of cutting-edge AI models, the initial previews are only available to a limited number of trusted partners, with plans to release them to the public in the coming weeks.
The flagship model Sol introduces an Ultra mode for maximum inference strength and sub-agent collaboration. In the Terminal-Bench 2.1 command-line workflow test, Sol achieved a score of 88.8%, rising to 91.9% in Ultra mode, surpassing GPT-5.5's 83.4% and Claude Fable 5's 88.0%. The mid-range model Terra achieves performance close to GPT-5.5 at half the price, while the lightest model, Luna, is designed for everyday automation tasks. Sol is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens, and supports using prompt word caching to reduce the cost of secondary calls.
In terms of security, the security assessment confirmed that Sol did not cross the Preparedness Framework's critical cybersecurity thresholds. OpenAI invested over 700,000 A100 equivalent GPU hours in automated red team drills, equipping its entire model suite with a defense stack that includes denial-of-service mechanisms, real-time abuse classifiers, and account-level auditing. While the current limited release complies with the US government's security framework, OpenAI emphasizes that it does not want government-led access mechanisms to become the long-term default mode, as this would restrict defense personnel's access to cutting-edge tools.
