Odaily Planet Daily reports that Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has signed an executive order on virtual assets, aimed at regulating virtual assets and cracking down on unregistered operators. The measure, effective immediately, will establish a new oversight framework to harmonize the fragmented regulatory environment. The newly established Virtual Assets Commission will serve as the primary policy-making and coordinating body, chaired by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), with the Nigerian Tax Authority and the Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (NSEC) serving as vice-chairs. A Virtual Assets Office will be established within the CBN to handle inter-agency day-to-day operations and information sharing. Securities-related financial activities will be managed by the NSEC, while payment, settlement, and custody services for non-securities virtual assets will be managed by the CBN. The CBN plans to launch a regulatory sandbox, allowing qualified operators to test virtual asset products and blockchain solutions in a monitored environment. The Virtual Assets Commission must develop an implementation framework for the executive order within 30 days.

Odaily Planet Daily reports that FTX Recovery Trust and FTX announced that the next round of fund distributions will begin on July 31, allocating approximately $900 million to both facilitator and non-facilitator claimants under the restructuring plan. Eligible creditors will receive funds within 1 to 3 business days through their BitGo, Kraken, or Payoneer accounts. This is the fifth round of repayments by FTX to its creditors. Under FTX's restructuring plan, facilitator claims under $50,000 will receive 120% repayment, while other claims will receive 103% to 105% of the allocated funds. Since FTX filed for bankruptcy in November 2022, FTX Recovery Trust has distributed approximately $10 billion. Former FTX CEO Sam “SBF” Bankman-Fried, sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2024, had his conviction and sentencing appeals rejected last month.
