According to Bitcoin News, a new study by @PraveenPerera suggests that Coldcard attackers first identified vulnerable addresses, then sorted them by the amount of Bitcoin held, and began transferring the Bitcoin in batches starting with the address with the highest holdings. The actual transfer software used was rather crude. One address had 225 spendable UTXOs, and the attackers extracted exactly the newest 200, leaving the oldest 25, including a UTXO worth 0.16 BTC. This perfectly aligns with the default 200-record return limit of a blockchain API investigated by researchers, indicating that the attackers may have failed to load the next page of data. The software even spent a 294-satoshi UTXO, reportedly increasing transaction fees by approximately 2040 satoshis, a cost significantly higher than the UTXO's intrinsic value. The study authors conclude that the tool's creators likely had a stronger understanding of the account balance system than of the Bitcoin UTXO model. Although the attackers appear to have obtained the victim's complete seed, at least 75 BTC remain in other addresses derived from the same seed. The biggest question at present is that 132.95 BTC are still among the 153 stolen addresses. Researchers are still unable to reproduce the seed behind these addresses, so it cannot be ruled out that the attackers obtained unpublished private device data or candidate data.
