According to BlockBeats, on July 31, the Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that Situational Awareness, a hedge fund founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, suffered significant losses in July amid a sharp decline in AI stocks, with its net asset value falling by approximately 67% during the month.

The report states that the fund had previously heavily invested in AI-related stocks. As these holdings experienced a significant pullback, the fund was forced to sell most of its stock positions to raise cash to meet margin calls from lenders. A considerable portion of these holdings were taken over by Ken Griffin's Citadel.

In a letter to investors, Aschenbrenner stated, "We disappointed you this month." He attributed some of the losses to increased short selling and described the fund as experiencing pressure akin to a "bank run." Despite this, Situational Awareness had previously seen substantial gains, reaching a year-to-date return of 270% by the end of May; even after the July crash, it is still up approximately 80% year-to-date.

The report also stated that Situational Awareness, established approximately two years ago, once managed assets exceeding $20 billion. Aschenbrenner had no prior professional investment experience, but his research and influence in the AI field have led some investors to view him as a trendsetter in AI investment. The fund still holds investments in private AI companies, including Anthropic.
