Alphabet raised its full-year capital expenditure forecast more than expected, causing its stock price to plunge 4% in after-hours trading.
According to BlockBeats, on July 23, Alphabet announced stronger-than-expected second-quarter 2026 results, with earnings per share of $9.11 and revenue of $11.98 billion, exceeding Wall Street's expectations of $2.88 and $11.651 billion, respectively. However, due to investor concerns about the company's significantly increased capital expenditure plans and recent pressure on profit margins , according to BIT (bit.com) data, Alphabet's stock price fell to $327.4 in after-hours trading, a drop of 4.24%.
Market analysts believe the reason for Alphabet's sharp after-hours drop was the company's upward revision of its full-year 2026 capital expenditure forecast to $19.5 billion to $20.5 billion, up from the previous forecast of $18 billion to $19 billion. Management stated that this upward revision reflects plans to accelerate capacity delivery to meet demand. Approximately 60% of the expenditure is expected to be allocated to servers, and 40% to data center and network equipment.
The company stated that demand for AI infrastructure remains strong, but supply constraints continue to limit the speed of capacity delivery. Management also indicated that the use of third-party capacity in the third quarter may put some pressure on profit margins, while the integration of Wiz will also pose a short-term headwind in 2026. Looking ahead, Alphabet expects demand for search, YouTube, and cloud services to remain strong, with AI capabilities driving more usage and improving monetization. The company also stated that the majority of revenue from TPU system sales is expected to be recognized in 2027 rather than 2026.
Google Cloud significantly exceeded expectations, with two key metrics: revenue up 82% year-over-year and operating profit margin at 34%.
According to BlockBeats, on July 23, Alphabet, Google's parent company, released its Q2 results last night. Alphabet's Q2 revenue was $119.8 billion, a 24% year-over-year increase; operating profit was $40.8 billion, a 30% year-over-year increase; and net profit was $112.1 billion, a staggering 298% year-over-year surge, driven by a dramatic increase in gains from equity investments such as Anthropic.
Notably, Google Cloud revenue reached $24.8 billion, far exceeding market expectations of $22.5 billion, representing a year-on-year increase of 82%. While cloud revenue significantly surpassed Wall Street expectations, the backlog of signed but not yet recognized cloud orders increased to $514 billion, exceeding $500 billion for the first time, further demonstrating that the company's massive AI investments are translating into commercial returns. During the same period, the company's capital expenditures reached $44.9 billion, exceeding market expectations of $44.2 billion. The CEO stated that AI investment is redefining the entire business.
Democrats oppose the revised Clarity Act due to its ethical provisions, arguing that bipartisan support remains crucial.
Odaily Planet Daily reports that U.S. Senate Republicans released a 616-page new version of the Clarity Act, a key legislative development in Congress's attempt to comprehensively regulate the digital asset industry. The crypto industry generally welcomed the draft, believing it retains provisions protecting software developers and promises to provide long-neglected regulatory clarity for the U.S. digital asset market. Ji Hun Kim, CEO of the Crypto Council for Innovation, stated that bipartisan support was "crucial" for the bill's passage. Solana Policy Institute CEO Miller Whitehouse-Levine urged Congress to seize the opportunity, while Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong stated that the lack of a federal regulatory framework allowed bad actors like FTX to harm consumers and forced many crypto businesses to move overseas. However, several Senate Democrats quickly expressed opposition, arguing that the ethical provisions regarding Trump's conflicts of interest in crypto assets were too weak. Senator Angela Alsobrooks stated that the current Republican text is still "insufficient," and provisions concerning elected officials' ethics, consumer protection, illicit finance, conflicts of interest, and market integrity need to be strengthened.
Mizuho: The Clarity Act may intensify competition among stablecoins in the long run, negatively impacting Circle.
According to an Odaily report, Mizuho analysts stated that while the Clarity Act, the US cryptocurrency market structure bill, might generally benefit the digital asset industry, its long-term impact on Circle could be negative. The reasoning is that regulatory clarity will attract more large institutions to the stablecoin market, further accelerating the commoditization of stablecoins and eroding the revenue potential of Circle's USDC. Mizuho believes that Circle's main pressure recently comes from OpenUSD. This stablecoin project is supported by a consortium of over 140 financial, technology, and crypto companies, including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, BlackRock, and Coinbase. Unlike Circle's model of retaining approximately 38% of USDC reserve profits, OpenUSD adopts a "pass-through" model, distributing almost all reserve profits to distributors and retaining only a small management fee. Analysts also pointed out that Coinbase, as the largest distributor of USDC and also supporting OpenUSD, may have stronger bargaining power when renegotiating its revenue-sharing agreement with Circle in the future. The distribution agreement between the two parties could be renegotiated as early as next month.
Benchmark raises its price target for the Hut 8 to $195.
Benchmark Equity Research raised its price target for Hut 8 from $165 to $195 on Wednesday, citing the full commercialization of the company's Beacon Point AI data center campus in Texas. This is the second time this month that Benchmark has raised its price target for Hut 8. Last week, analyst Mark Palmer had already included the first phase of the Beacon Point project in its valuation, raising the price target from $85 to $165. The new price target implies an upside of approximately 75% from Hut 8's share price of around $111 on Wednesday. Hut 8 currently has 949 megawatts of AI data center capacity under contract, indicating that its business is shifting further from traditional Bitcoin mining to AI infrastructure and power-driven data center models. Benchmark believes the company is evolving towards a "power-first data center REIT," an infrastructure platform centered on power resources and data center assets. Hut 8's stock rose about 2% on Wednesday, and has risen nearly 120% year-to-date. As the demand for AI computing power continues to grow, the market is reassessing the value of the massive power and data center resources held by Bitcoin mining companies.
