Gemini Digital Payments Singapore said on Sept. 8 that the Monetary Authority of Singapore granted it a Major Payment Institution license. The approval gives Gemini a new full regulatory credential in a market where it has served customers since 2020.
In the official announcement , Gemini described Singapore as an established operating hub and said its local entity currently provides digital-asset spot trading, custody and over-the-counter services. The company did not announce a new token, market or product alongside the license.
The MAS license formalizes Gemini’s Singapore position
Gemini framed the decision as validation of its investment in the country rather than the start of a previously absent business. “Securing the MPI license from MAS validates our commitment and investment into Singapore,” President and co-founder Cameron Winklevoss said. He added that the exchange has served customers there for six years.
The announcement identifies Gemini Digital Payments Singapore Pte. Ltd. as the licensed entity. That distinction matters because the statement concerns the Singapore operation specifically; it is not presented as a blanket approval for every Gemini affiliate or service in other jurisdictions.
Retail and institutional services remain the focus
CEO and co-founder Tyler Winklevoss said Singapore’s regulatory framework and role as a financial center make it a strategic hub for Gemini. According to his statement, the license positions the company to continue serving both retail and institutional customers in the country.
Gemini lists three existing lines of business in Singapore: spot trading, custody and OTC services. Its release does not specify changes to fees, supported assets or onboarding requirements, nor does it give a launch timetable for additional products. The concrete development is the license grant itself, while any later service expansion would require a separate announcement.
Singapore continues to attract licensed crypto firms
The approval places Gemini alongside other digital-asset companies that have pursued payment licensing in Singapore. BlockchainReporter previously covered how Circle’s Singapore unit secured a Major Payment Institution license in 2023, providing a direct point of comparison for the same license class and regulator.
Gemini said it remains committed to operating under applicable laws and regulations and to providing a secure platform for trading and storing digital assets. For readers, the immediate significance is narrower than a product rollout: MAS has granted the named local company MPI status, and Gemini says its existing Singapore services will continue under that framework.
