All technologies that intervene in complex natural processes (slowly) follow the trajectory:
1. Impossible
2. Reckless
3. Avant-garde
4. Mainstream
5. Irresponsible not to
IMO this is true for medicine, food science, genetics, geoengineering, and other spaces. Version 1 of some tech will always suck, people will over-learn the lesson that that tech "is a road not to be gone down", and not see that version 4 actually works.
The main exception is centralized interference with *human society*. This is because when interfering with human society, it's not just the manipulator whose tech improves day by day, but also each new technology makes the society you're trying to manipulate itself more complex, and constantly zeroing out much of your accumulated "wisdom" on how to manipulate it. And so "leave people alone" keeps unreasonably winning in very wide sets of circumstances.
This is the core thesis of liberal transhumanism.
