UAE and Sweden Arrest Seven in Crypto Money Laundering Bust Tied to Contract Killings

The UAE Ministry of Interior, in coordination with Swedish authorities, has arrested a Swedish national who led an international money-laundering gang, while six other members of the network were detained simultaneously in Sweden, according to a September 17 announcement from the Emirates News Agency (WAM). The network is alleged to have handled roughly SEK 70 million, about AED 26.5 million, over ten months, moving cash proceeds from criminal activity and using cryptocurrencies to transfer the value of those funds. The operation was the result of direct security coordination and intelligence sharing between the two countries.

How the Network Moved the Money

Investigators said the gang redirected cash derived from criminal activity to other criminal entities, while cryptocurrencies were used to move the funds across borders. Extensive searches, investigations, and close monitoring led authorities to the gang leader’s whereabouts in the UAE, where he was arrested at the same time six members of the network were detained in Sweden. The suspect had fled Sweden and was wanted under an Interpol Red Notice on suspicion of money-laundering offenses, a case that echoes the cross-border enforcement push that recently saw the U.S. Treasury sanction the Iranian exchange BitBank over Bitcoin transfers to the IRGC.

Crypto Tracing Uncovered a Link to Contract Killings

Tracing cryptocurrency transactions and analyzing digital evidence helped uncover financial links to other criminal activity, including organized crime and contract killings, the Ministry of Interior said. The findings underscore how blockchain analytics increasingly drives investigations into crypto-enabled crime, a trend Chainalysis documented in recent reporting on a sharp rise in blockchain-based malware delivery.

What Officials Said

Brigadier Abdulaziz Al Ahmad, Director General of the Federal Criminal Police at the Ministry of Interior, said the operation “underscores the effectiveness of security cooperation” between the UAE and Sweden. He added that the UAE “will continue to track criminal networks, disrupt their sources of financing, and take legal action” against anyone seeking to exploit its territory for criminal activities. Anders Wiberg, Police Commissioner and head of the international division of the Swedish Police Authority, said “the close and effective cooperation with the United Arab Emirates was a key factor in achieving the successful outcome of this case.” Legal proceedings have been initiated against the seven suspects.
