Handshake是去中心化域名协议，与DNS(域名系统，一种分层的、分散的命名系统) 兼容。专注于DNS顶级域名（TLD）的注册、认证、交易和解析。用户使用HNS在Namebase上为TLD竞标，向该域名注册子域名时可赚取代币。创始团队包括比特币闪电网络的提出者、比特币电商平台Purse的CEO等。
Handshake 协议在技术上相当复杂，但是其背后的工作流程想法却很简单。本质上，Handshake 提供了一个代币（HNS），HNS通过POW挖矿产出，用户可以使用该代币购买域名注册。用户想在域名系统根（DNS root）上注册一个域名的时候，可以使用 HNS 代币支付注册费用。之后，用户会收到一个公开的加密密钥，该密钥就是证明域名注册属于该用户的可识别证据，继而确保网络上所有用户能够对拥有给定域名的这个人进行验证。
如果想要转移域名，只需在彼此之间出售对应不同域名的 HNS 代币即可。所有 HNS 代币交易都会被记录在公有链上，因此整个用户组都可以验证相关域名的所有权，系统安全性则是通过工作量证明共识来维护。
Handshake由加密生态系统中的一群杰出的从业者创建，旨在分散和保护互联网的命名空间。由比特币闪电网络的创始人Joseph Poon，Purse首席执行官Andrew Lee，Christopher Jeffrey发起。
Handshake此前获得一些顶级风险资本家和知名区块链开发者支持，此次参与1020万美元融资的基金包括A16z、Founders Fund、Polychain Capital和Draper Associates。这些投资者一同购买了7.5％的协议，该协议目前估值1.36亿美元。
