In short, Threshold is a way to protect the privacy of users' information and digital assets when using a public blockchain.

Protecting user information and privacy of digital assets has always been the direction of exploration in the industry.

The Threshold Network is built on top of a set of "keep's" that are off-chain warehouses for encrypting data. When consensus is reached, Threshold Network nodes can jointly decrypt data or transfer access to another party. Threshold network nodes can respond to smart contract calls, so the threshold network acts as a bridge between private data and the public blockchain.

As part of the merger, a new token (T) will be introduced for Threshold Network. Keep Network and NuCypher both currently have their own tokens and upon release, holders will be able to exchange T for Keep and NU.

T is used as a platform governance token.

Threshold Network can be used to build the next generation of decentralized applications with a wide range of use cases from medical applications and insurance to social media. For example, a creator could sell an NFT that uses the Threshold Network to automatically unlock access to private content.

The first significant application on the Keep Network or NuCypher is tBTC. TBTC is a packaged version of BTC launched on Ethereum in September 2020. TBTC uses KEEP to hold BTC securely as collateral. Currently, there are $42 million of TBTCS in circulation on Ethereum. TBTC V2 will launch on Threshold Network later this year. In the near future, Threshold Network will increase tBTC adoption and possibly introduce other cross-chain assets. But T will only really take off when it is adopted by a wider range of applications.

Being able to integrate private data with smart contracts seems interesting, but so far there hasn't been that much use of the Keep Network or NuCypher. Finding product fit with the market is probably the greatest uncertainty of the threshold network. Technical risks: The Threshold Network adopts complex encryption protocols to build, and the risks introduced are beyond the normal smart contract risks of other Dapps.

Threshold Network is interesting, but there aren't many use cases for this technology yet.
